AFC & NFC South Division Previews

NFL divison previews continue with a look at both South Divisions.

Indianapolis has won this division in all but two years since it came into existence in 2002. I think they’ll do it again this year, but it’s going to be hairier than normal. Below are predicted records and a link to each team’s full preview…

Indianapolis (9-7): It’s not just the question of Peyton’s health, it’s the question marks on the offensive line and the lack of playmakers on defense.

Houston (8-8): The Texans defense gets off to a slow start transitioning to a 3-4 scheme, but finishes strong. Is it enough to keep Gary Kubiak around?

Tennessee (7-9): With Chris Johnson back in the fold and a veteran quarterback in Matt Hasselbeck, they’ll compete, but the defensive line is too big of a flaw.

Jacksonville (7-9):This record might be overly optimistic if they can’t improve the defense and get better production from the wideouts.

There’s no one here that’s really good, but there’s no doormat like those that exist in the AFC’s other divisions. It should be a good race all year.

The NFC South has produced the conference’s #1 playoff seed each of the past two years, even if Atlanta couldn’t turn it into a Super Bowl run last year the way New Orleans did the previous year. Here’s how the best division in football shapes up, with predicted records and links to full team previews…

Tampa Bay (11-5): I like this team’s young defensive line and Josh Freeman’s ability as a difference-maker. It’s Tampa’s turn at the top.

New Orleans (11-5): If the Saints’ defense can get back to their 2009 level another Super Bowl run is within reach.

Atlanta (10-6): The offense and the defensive front four are championship-caliber, but the back seven on defense still needs work.

Carolina (5-11): Carolina’s got decent players, enough to be competitive on a weekly basis and steal a few wins. It’s the lack of big-play personnel on both sides of the ball that holds them back.

*It's Closing Weekend at Saratoga as the track runs through Labor Day, while Del Mar out west is set to wrap it up September 7. Visit for updates on the doings here and at major tracks around the country.
